Growth and development of the economy triggers expansion in urbanization. This often induces migration of population from rural and semi urban areas to big towns and cities. Unless proper planning is undertaken well ahead of time, uncontrolled growth in urbanization could cause strain to the municipal infrastructures especially solid Waste Management. Like most urban cities, Guwahati the capital of Assam and the biggest city in North East India, is facing these problems. Moreover, in India, it is mandatory for all urban and local bodies to comply with MSW rules 2000.
